Hong Kong Sport Climbing Championship 2001, December 2001
Scheduled in December 2001.


10th Asian Sport Climbing Championship, INDONESIA, 26-28 October 2001
Scheduled on 26-28 Oct 2001 in Jarkarta, Indonesia.


1st Asia Cup Sport Climbing Competition, CHINA, 12-14 September 2001
The 1st Asia Cup was held in Kunming, China. Representing Singapore were: Philip Lim (Difficulty), Mohd Halil (Diff & Speed), Muhd Hazlee (Diff & Speed) and Serena Tan (Difficulty). This comp is not only important for the development of the sport of climbing in China and Asia, but also important and strategic for the Olympic movement of UIAA/ICC given that China will hold the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. 


Just Climb 01, Pulau Ubin, 7-9 September 2001
This comp was organised by Ubin Adventure Centre at the Ubin Lagoon Resort, and endorsed by the SMF as part of the National Ranking Ciruit for Difficulty event. Setting route for this competition were Norman Mansoor and Rozihan Anwar. 


4th Bouldering Ranking Competition, Sentosa, 25-26 August 2001
This comp was organised by Ubin Adventure Centre at the Ubin Lagoon Resort, and endorsed by the SMF as part of the National Ranking Ciruit for Difficulty event. Setting route for this competition were Norman Mansoor and Rozihan Anwar. 


3rd Asian Youth Climbing Championship held at Zanjan, IRAN, 25-27 July 2001
Held at Zanjan in Iran, this championship was a good exposure for our young climbers who competed alongside countries such as host Iran, Japan, Korea and Hong Kong.


National Sport Climbing Championship 2001, 26 May - 9 Jun 2001
The 10th Rock On organised by SAFRA, SMF and Singapore Sport Council saw some 850 competitors battling it out for the Championship title in a total of 21 categories under 2 event types - Difficulty and Speed. It was the firts major competition held at the new National Rock Climbing Centre at the SAFRA Yishun Country Club. Assoc Prof Ho Peng Kee was the Guest-of-Honour.

UIAA General Assembly, Clairefontaine, France, 19-22 Oct 2000
Representing the SMF for this UIAA meeting were Anthony Seah and David Lim. 


2nd Asian Youth Sport Climbing Championship, Beijing, China, 13-16 Oct 2000
The SMF sent 7 youth climbers (6 male and 1 female) to participate in this competition in Beijing. The team bagged a Gold, two Silvers and two Bronzes. Muhd Hazlee (First Toa Payoh) took a bronze in Youth B Boys' Difficulty event and a gold in Speed event; Dzulfadli (Springfield) and Cliff Tan (Springfield) took silver and bronze respectively in Youth B Boys' Speed event; and Jenny Lee (NJC) took silver in Junior Girls' Speed event.

Hong Kong Invitation Climb, Hong Kong, 27-28 November 1999
The SMF sent a team of 2 male climbers to participate in this event organised by the HK Mountaineering Union.


Asian X Games, Phuket, Thailand, 4-7 November 1999
A team of 4 climbers participated in this event. Sulhan Ahmad clinched 6th and 10th positions in the Speed and Bouldering events respectively.


UIAA Conference, Greece, 23-25 September 1999
Representing the SMF in this assembly were Yip Seck Hong, President and Rasip Isnin, Secretary.


8th Asian Sport Climbing Championship, Hua San, China, 3-5 September 1999
The SMF sent a team of 6 climbers (4 men and 2 ladies) and 2 officials for this competition in which a total of 81 competitors from 9 countries participated. Apart from Philip Lim who qualified for the semi-finals in the Men's category, all our climbers were knocked-out in the preliminary rounds.


NYC Youth Adventure Day, 21 August 1999
SMF organised the rock climbing competition, as one of the 3 adventure sports featured in the Youth Adventure Day. Some 400 visitors tried their hands on climbing the wall.


National Sport Climbing Championship & 1st Asian Youth Sport Climbing Championship, 12-19 June 1999
SMF, SAFRA and Singapore Sport Council are proud to host the 1st Asian Youth Sport Climbing Championship in conjunction with the 8th annual National Sport Climbing Championship held from 12 to 19 June 1999 in the Expo Gateway, World Trade Centre, Singapore.  Organised by the Asian Council for Competition Climbing (ACC), the 1st Asian Youth Sport Climbing Championship was a platform to groom young climbing talents and further promote the sport in Asian.  Some 80 young and budding climbers from 9 regional climbing federations gathered here to pit their skills and share in the camaraderie of fellow enthusiasts.  Mr David Lim, Minister-of-State (Defence and Information & the Arts) & President, SAFRA was the Guest-of-Honour.  1st Asian Youth Championship Results


7th SMF Annual General Meeting, 24 March 1999
The 7th SMF AGM held on 24 March 1999 elected a new 10-man Management Committee to tackle the many challenges into the new millennium. The tasks ahead:
  • Reviewing and updating the Singapore National Climbing Standards (SNCS) 
  • Instituting a systemic approach to competition climbing - training and coaching 
  • Instituting a broad based approach to promoting mountaineering nationwide, as a follow-on to the Everest project
  • Developing a plan to promote climbing at national school level


Talk on Mountaineering & Trekking in India by Indian Mountaineer Mandip Soin Singh, 6 February 1999
Mandip, a member of both the Alpine Clubs of UK and USA and a Fellow of the Royal Geographical and Royal Photographic Societies, has climbed extensively in the Indian Himalayas and is also very active in many other adventure sports such as rock climbing, skiing and canoeing. He is actively involved in Outdoor youth development programs through various youth organisations. He has been recognised for his contributions to adventure and has received several distinguished awards. He gave a slide show presentation to a packed audience at SAFRA Toa Payoh.

Climbers' Gathering at Dairy Farm Quarry, 25 & 26 July 1998
Sharing of knowledge and experience about types and setting up of anchors on rock; included hands-on practices. BBQ - makan & fun. Learning of bolting techniques on rock.


Launch of the Singapore National Climbing Standards (SNCS), 18 July 1998
Officially launched on 18 Jul 1998 by COL(Ret) Kwan Yue Yeong, Executive Director, Singapore Sport Council, the SNCS is the national certification system for climbing courses and professional climbing instruction. It is endorsed by the Singapore Sport Council and comprised of 2 key components - Climbing Course Spectrum and Climbing Instructor Scheme. The SNCS is administered and regulated by the SMF, with the help of the SNCS Training Advisory Board.
